The horror industry is known for having some extreme die hard fans, and I have to admit I am one of them. I grew up checking R.L. Stine books out of my school library and searching high and low for new ones at the Scholastic book fair. I even started watching horror films at a young age, and I was obsessed with the Goosebumps show. When I heard about Netflix coming out with a trilogy of movies based on Stine's Fear Street, I was extremely excited. Mostly because when I did my research I found out that they were directed by a woman. Woman directors are a rarity in the horror genre. Maybe it's because of the superiority complex of so many men in the film industry. Maybe it's internalized misogyny in society saying that women can't do horror as well as men. But the Fear Street movies blew the horror community away. Everyone loved them and was so impressed with the level of craftmanship that went into these movies. They truly felt like they could have been classic horror films that we were all just now discovering- and in a sense, that is true. Leigh Janiak created an entire trilogy of modern classic horror movies. They have themes of feminism, indepence, female empowerment and equality. They depict the female struggle in society so well while simulataneously being truly amazing entries into the horror genre. I personally cannot wait to see what else Leigh Janiak creates. I personally cannot get enough of Fear Street, and I know I am not alone in saying that. Regardless of what she makes next, I will be sat in front of the screen watching and cheering her on.
